Description – adapted from the book ‘Transforming Five Element and Meridian Patterns with Resonance Repatterning’ by Chloe Faith Wordsworth:
In the Chinese Five Element tradition, the five elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are a map of universal frequencies and everything in nature resonates with the vibrational frequency of one of the five elements. For instance, joy and laughter correspond with the Fire element which is all about connection, while valuing oneself and others corresponds with Metal, and optimism and hope are qualities of the Wood element.
Each of the Seasons on earth corresponds to one of the elements. Often we notice that we have certain symptoms in our body-mind system that appear with a certain season or we find we have strong feelings of love or hate for a particular season. These can be indications of an imbalance in the element that corresponds to that season. The Seasonal Repatterning helps us address any such imbalances.
Let’s have a look at some of the qualities of the seasons, or rather, the elements that correspond to each season:
Spring
Spring is connected to the Wood Element. Coherent Wood energy allows us to have focus, be organized, creative and hopeful, to be decisive, positively self-assertive, and have good timing. Strong Wood energy gives us vision and good planning. Optimism is the name of the game of a well balanced Wood element.
When non-coherent, Wood energy can manifest as anger, frustration, impatience, indecisiveness, feeling stuck, lacking direction, being critical and hopeless.
Qualities of Wood include: giving birth, new beginnings, vision, making goals and having a sense of direction, planning, flexibility, decision making, judgement, potential, identity, positive self-assertion, hope, discernment, creativity, focus, timing and self-esteem.
Summer
Summer is connected to the Fire Element. Coherent Fire energy allows us to be warm, discerning, compassionate, unconditionally loving and joyful. Protection and safety are also qualities of Fire, as is intimacy, healthy sexual bonding and union, laughter and maturity.
When non-coherent, Fire energy can manifest as joylessness, a closed heart and being emotionally cold, walled off, and humorless. We can also be chaotic, swing from hot to cold and back again, be immature and not want to grow up, get confused about love and what is appropriate, be sexually promiscuous, addicted to sex, unable to connect with others, and be and feel excessively vulnerable. We also tend to look for joy and happiness from outside of ourselves.
Qualities of Fire include: joy, warmth, intimacy, sexuality, compassion, positive control, sorting out, communication and connection, social relationships, balance, protection, maturity and open-heartedness.
Late Summer – Harvest
Later Summer is connected to the Earth Element. Coherent Earth energy allows us to be nurturing, grounded, secure, stable, sympathetic and empathetic, centered, generous, and to feel at home. Strong Earth energy helps us with transitions and we are able to reap the harvest from all our experiences. It also allows us to assimilate knowledge, food, ideas, etc with ease.
When non-coherent, Earth energy can manifest as being obsessive, self-centred, unstable, needy, and feeling abandoned and deprived. Worry and overwhelm are qualities of an out of balance Earth element, as is giving too much of ourselves and then resenting it.
Qualities of Earth include: mothering, self-nurturance, supportiveness, caring for others, sympathy, groundedness, home, digestion, reaping the harvest, security, imagination, natural cycles and transitions, and centering.
Autumn
Autumn or Fall is connected to the Metal Element. Coherent Metal energy allows us to value ourselves and others, be respectful, inspired, pure, and act with integrity. We have an incisive intellect, high self-worth, and are able to let go of what we do not need. We value quality and have spiritual connection and aspirations.
When non-coherent, Metal energy can manifest as having low self-worth, being arrogant, feeling inadequate, feeling dirty, justifying our mistakes, and being cold, cut off and judgmental. Money can feel tarnished and life lacks meaning. Knowledge without heart and disconnection from spirit are also signs of out of balance Metal.
Qualities of Metal include: quality, value, clear intellect, inspiration, respect, fathering, perfection, purity, inner connection, letting go, breath, divine purpose, money, appreciation and acknowledgement, and truth.
Winter
Winter is connected to the Water Element. Coherent Water energy allows us to have power, drive, courage, adaptability and perseverance, and to be honest, calm, reflective and to flow with ease. Intelligence and depth are also qualities of coherent Water energy. Wisdom is the name of the game of a well balanced Water element.
When non-coherent, Water energy can manifest as feeling depleted and exhausted, frozen, stuck and stagnant, and we give up easily. We can feel disempowered, fearful or even paralyzed. We lack clear boundaries and dissipate our energy, money, etc.
Qualities of Water include: perseverance, ambition, drive, high-powered energy, empowerment, flowing, adaptability, calmness, clear thought, depth, containment, reserves, courage, boundaries, cleverness, responsiveness – reflecting and listening, soothing effect and cleansing effect.
